Art Box Diary

Natural Textile Dying

I've done some more textile dying. This time, I used the steaming method. I used two types of fabric, one was cotton and the other was silk. The silk piece of fabric is the silk scarf I used last time when I did a cold bundle.

After steaming the fabric for a hour then allowing it to cool, I rolled back the cotton fabric to see the results. I found the leaves did not print so well. As the fabric dried it was difficult to see what I had done.

On the silk, I had a different result. The onion leaves left a dark print, whilst the oak leaves left a light 'watermark' . Overall I'm happy with the results.

I need to keep on experimenting with different methods and fabric. Next I'd like to try wool.

etegami

Now that the exhibition is behind me, I can get back into doing things like sending etegami to Keiko. Above are two that I have done. What I like about etegami is that you don't have to worry about mistakes, as they become part of the painting. You just create and send it off.

Below is a short video about etegami that I found on youtube in case you'd like to make your own etegami too.

Open House - Exhibition

Ingrid and I held our open house exhibition over the long weekend here in Japan. On the Saturday we had opening drinks in the evening which was successful. Through the duration of the exhibition, there was a constant flow of people coming through and looking at our work. Amy helped out with the cleaning and Dox, Justin and Mizuho helped with the food preparation. Thank you so much everyone. It's nice to have supportive friends during these events.

Email from Finland

Every morning, I check my email before I leave work, as I find it a relaxing way to begin my day. This morning, I was surprised to receive an email from Minna in Finland. She told me when she was in Nikko about a year ago, she bought one of my Kokeshi Postcards that I produce and sell in a store there. I was pleased when she asked if she could use the postcard to be included in a photo of her work that may be featured in ARTE Magazine (A German Publication) in Januray next year.

Minna was kind enough to allow me to use the photo on my blog too. So be sure to head over to her website and checkout her work, and if you are in Finland, then please visit the Goddis store, which is a co-operative store!

I've been a bit quiet recently, but that thing called work gets in the way! And I socialize a bit too. But with vacation and house sitting coming up on the weekend, I'll have lots of time to make stuff more my Art Box Diary store at ETSY which I finally got around to doing.

I guessed it after I went back to my page, and saw there were about 3 dolls in my friends group. Very understandable mistake.

Did you leave your comment to the wrong person? You said my "dolls" must take a lot of work, but I don't make dolls. I have artwork and painted glassware.

Hey Jason... I just saw your post that you are having problems. You should be able to add friends by going to their page and clicking the "Add as friend" link below their profile picture. If that is not working - are you signed in? Otherwise, feel free to comment on my page with a question, or ask IndieAdmin - she's great at fixing these problems.

Good luck! I hope you get it working!

Just letting people know I am not snubbing you but not adding you as friends. It's just that I can't do it! Stay tuned!
