Sewing paper

Hi, We were going to create some little journals with blank pages and recycled cardboard covers. Does anybody know if I can safely run this through our singer sewing machine without causing damage to the machine and if so, how many sheets (plus the cover ) could I go through? The covers would be thin cardboard like cereal box thickness.
