What kind of pets do you have? What are their names? Any pet that you would love to have some day?

We have three cats: Willow, Escher and Beaker.

I have always wanted a Pot Bellied Pig. Haven't quite convinced the hubbie yet, though. :)

I have a cat named Indigo. He's a psycho kitten. I would absolutely love to have a horse someday but so far, that's been impossible.

My boyfriend and I have 2 guinea pigs. Selma and Winnie. The original were Selma and Patty (Marge Simpsons' sisters) but Patty died (on Mother's Day) one week after we got her. We live in an apartment and don't have kids so these our are little girls. Selma is a short hair who is the size of a big burrito and she has a double chin. She's very affectionate and doesn't wander to far. Winnie is a long hair and she's smaller, she's kind of like Cousin It. she's a squirmer and is only affectionate when she's waiting for her snack of carrots. We can't let her out of her cage for too long or she'll try to squirm to run away and explore.

I love that you compared your guinea pig to a burrito! Cracked me up! :)

I have five cats: Echo, Esta, Macushla, Moo-Cow, and Star. I split my time between my house in Nova Scotia and my parents house (where I am now.) They have three cats: Eli, Toby, and Neela.

We just moved all eight cats from my parents old house in Yonkers (north of NYC) to their new house in Maine. What an adventure!

They're totally worth it though. I can't imagine life without animals.

We did several moves with our cats over the last few years. Quite a challenge, indeed. One of them, we have to tranquilize because he gets seriously car sick. Poor guy.

I can't imagine living without animals, either.

Eight from Yonkers to Maine...where in Maine? In 2004 we moved 8 cockatiels in 5 travel cages, wedged into the back seat of hubby's blazer for a 3 day drive from Franklin New Hampshire (13 miles south of Laconia and 13 miles north of Concord) to Springdale Arkansas. We're about to do it again, too, and move the 5 we've got now from Springdale Arkansas to Washington state. Talk about an adventure!!! The 5 are all pictured on my Indie page if you're curious :-)

Belfast--we're still getting settled in. Prior moves have included Athens, Georgia to Yonkers, New York, then Yonkers, New York to Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, plus many trips back and forth between Parrsboro and Yonkers (15 hours, usually done in one shot).

Arkansas to Washington!!! That's a long trip :-0

Apparently you move even more than we do! I'm hoping this is our last state to state move. I had to get all 5 tiels micro chipped this time since leg bands are no longer traceable. That was an adventure and boy did my tiels surprise me with how well they tollerated the chipping. Especially my 11 1/2 year old Cleo. This move will be more of an adventure than the last since we'll be stopping to visit relatives as we go. Most of mine live in California. So we're looking at an 8 day car ride and 2900 miles total this time! Yup, an adventure!

I really love birds but for obvious reasons smaller birds are out of the question. Where we used to live there was a great bird store that encouraged people to come in and play with the birds to socialize them. I fell in love with a hyacinth macaw, but at $12,000 he was a little bit out of my range....

How long to cockatiels live for? Are they talkers? I know they're fairly smart but I don't have much experience with them

If you've ever experienced a 2 year old human kid, you've experienced a tiel. Tiels have the average mentality of a 1 to 3 year old child. What ever a 1 to 3 year old can figure out, comprehend and understand, so does a tiel. Like human kids, that range of intelligence varies with each kid. No two kids are alike in smarts and neither are tiels. My AsaMina knows the order the letters of the alphabet go in and she can read her name and nickname (Beep, or Beeper). Her father was that unbelieveably smart, too. My Worthington is incredibly intelligent also and is way above average intelligence. My other three, thank goodness are of average intelligence. They live 3 to 7 years in captivity due to people not properly taking care of them. In the wild they can live 15 to 27 years. My friend Darlene has a soon to be 22 year old tiel. My current eldest is Cleo who's 11 1/2 years old. AsaMina's father lived to be 2 months shy of turning 16 years old and he died of old age. So there is a wide age range on how long they'll live. As long as you remember that the tiel you adopt will forever be a 2 year old and act like a 2 year old you're fine. As to talking ability. From all I've read, the ability to talk is genetic. Tiels mostly whistle, but some do talk. Worthington says 'Pretty Bird, Worthington' and he about shocked the day lights out of me when he said his first name! It's not one that he should have figured out due to it being so long and beginning with a 'W'. Actually, he says, 'RRRRR-thing-ton', but it's crystal clear. I told him if he figures out the rest of it I'll call Ripleys Believe It Or Not since his full name is Worthington Israel Wentworth :-) My Edgar Allan can say 'hello' and it was my Tyson Parker that taught Worthington how to say 'Pretty Bird'.

That's so cute! I can imagine it's a relief when they're not too smart. I've heard some funny stories about Quaker parrots and their ability to talk, including their ability to appropriately use profanity. It is a really big deal to take on most kinds of birds. I don't know if I could handle it, even without cats and a drafty, woodstove-heated house in NS. I had a roommate who had a rescued cockatoo and that was really tough. She needed so much love and attention, and was terribly jealous of anybody who interfered in her relationship with mommy. After I got over my fear of her beak we did become friends though.
