To be honest I'm in a pretty juicy period right now. The reason I ask my question is so that if I run into a dry spell I, and anyone else who needs it, can come here for a bit of refreshment.
The latest episode of CraftyPod is all about "Crafty Overload." People suggested keeping priorities, keeping a sketchbook to store your ideas until you have time to devote to them, and most importantly (*I* think) having hobbies that have nothing to do with crafting to balance yourself a bit.
I'm glad you asked this question; I'm in the process of accumulating inventory for my Etsy store opening in October and I am in dire need of balance and inspiration!
I recently found myself working on a portable project that I took to a friend's house. He knew I was working obsessiively, but he needed me to come over and invited me to bring some work with me. I sat with him and a mutual friend while we (mostly they) talked. I realized that I was on a sudden streak of new ideas and patterns and theorize that it was because I wasn't working in my usual isolation.Sometimes this will happen when I'm working at a show or demonstrating. I'm not sure why this is, but it could be changing the background or environment. Change one thing about how or where you work. Shake things up.
I read books or watch movies and sometimes I read art books. A lot of my art deals with mythology and ancient cultures so doing research on things helps me come up with ideas. And sometimes that means watching Jason and the Argonauts to see Ray Harryhausen's magnificent skeleton warriors... I'm not a textbook junkie.
I love this topic.
When I am feeling a need for a creativity "kick in the pants"...I head off to some favorite shops that have great displays for ideas, or wonderful craft shows...just to see what is new out there and get inspired.
Also, I have a group of wonderfully creative friends, and I gather them together to work on projects, or just have a girlfriends night and share ideas. Sometimes just stepping away from what I am working on and sharing a fun day or evening with friends is all I need to get going again.
I also put everything away and then I look through my materials. Sift through gemstones, stare at a piece of metal, and rearrange my tools and neaten up. That or the pressure of a show will surely get me going!
I try to go somewhere fun and colorful. If I can't go anywhere I just browse online shops and pretend I am at an artsy type town with cool and colorful shops!
Usually, when I need a "kick in the pants" is when I'm overloaded and overwhelmed. So, I renew my senses with outdoor activities (in the sun), also, I look through magazines for new ideas, or I go on fun adventures with people I love.
