Hi Harold! I've been selling on Etsy since February and business had been pretty good, with ups and downs throughout spring and summer. I find that when I list every couple of days, it keeps people coming into my store on a pretty regular basis. I also chat in the forums, showing off new items and promoting any sales I may be having. I've also gotten some interest and sales from having a feed from my stores on MySpace and other web pages like this one!

Before I joined Etsy, I was selling mainly on eBay. Ebay was good for me during the holidays last year and I will be listing items there again starting in November (even though the fees are crazy).

I hope you start listing soon! Good luck!

I was there for over a year, and yes I had TONS of sales (over 400), but I refuse to keep a store there. If you would like a list of reasons, I'll message them to you. No need to start a flame war about Etsy.

If you have a lot of time & patience, I say go for it :)

I guess it depends what you sell. I know some people sell things almost daily on Etsy, so I guess it's worth the try... Etsy is also much more then a selling tool. I have met so many nice and creative people there.

I can also recommend Dawanda.com if you want to reach a European public or Mintd.com for Australia. Both are still pretty new, but especially Dawanda is very promising. I like it! :)

I sell on etsy and have had 4 sales in only 2 months. I haven't done any marketing of my etsy shop and haven't listed new items very often so I think those 4 sales are excellent.

Also I only have been selling original paintings on etsy which dont' sell as well as prints. I have some prints to start listing today so I expect my sales to increase.

I love etsy. There are a lot of artists on there doing very well. And like somebody else said, it's only 20cents a listing for 4 months! Why don't you list 25 items and see how it goes. That's only $5, so no great loss if things don't sell!

Oh and I sold my avatar on etsy yesterday (the painting that my avatar is taken from :) It was my first canvas sale, so more money than my last 3 sales, which was fabulous! I was jumping up and down all morning :)

Amazing!!! How did Red Crow Arts do it? She should market her Etsy skills in a downloadable book :) I'd be first in line to buy.

I've been selling since April and doing pretty well by some standards, but I'll never be rich from it :) Just keep making what you love and promoting it on every free space you can find! They will come eventually

I personally Love Etsy. It's taken some time for me to get established but overall it's a great site. Other than local craft shows this is the only way I sell my goods.
One great things in particular has been the wholesale inquiries I recieve! I love getting my stuff into children's stores and boutiques, so Etsy has been a great help for me to do that!

Thanks for the nice comment about me studioalamode. I have worked hard since I joined Etsy and I am no stranger to hard work. All my business has been generated from Etsy with less than a handful of people I know buying from me. I lurked Etsy for a while watched how the site worked and started posting. I know there are people that have sold faster than me but usually it is supplies. I love it that everything on my site I have made and enjoy every bit of it. It has been tons of fun for me. I help and mentor when I can. I have sold more over seas than in my own state of Georgia isn't that goofey. I don't go off much but when I do I try to market myself. I have committed to seeing my items so anyone can afford them instead of taking the approach of overpricing and I think it has helped my sales too. I want to have a reason to create and if it sits in my studio getting dusty that is no good!
Best of luck to everyone of you. There are so many talented Etsy artist out there and everyone has a niche'! Glazing and clay is mine. I can not draw at all so I do not even try!

I've worked hard, promoted myself everywhere I can find for my Etsy shop. I made about thirteen sales between mid-May and mid-July, then they all but dried up. I know that some say to list every few days to keep yourself visible, but I don't make that many things! I'm involved with a street team and we'll be promoting Halloween items.. after that, and with all I do, if that doesn't work I'm at a loss as to what else to do.

I did have some luck on ebay with ACEOs, so I may do that more.

I do fantastically off-line, at art gallery group shows. At least people like my stuff there. :)

We've been on Etsy since the end of last year and it's been quite good. The sales there are still a small fraction of our main sales (from our online shop, wholesalers and distributors) but very worthwhile all the same. As others have said here, you DO need to promote - I don't think many people will just stumble across your Etsy shop.

One downside is that it's also, as someone else on this thread implied, a potential time-eater as the site still has many bugs and isn't that reliable. I found after a while that the best thing was not to get too irritated by that and just to put more time into our main shop when Etsy was being a pain. I don't think that getting very upset about it on the Etsy forums is all that productive. On the upside, we've had many great and likeable buyers and also I feel I've met some great people through the Etsy European team. All in all, I'm happy I opened the shop.
