What fills you up when your having a creative dry spell?

To be honest I'm in a pretty juicy period right now. The reason I ask my question is so that if I run into a dry spell I, and anyone else who needs it, can come here for a bit of refreshment.

Chad that is true ! I listen to daytime tv some myself. Sometimes it is a soap and sometimes it is the history channel.

I read that Picasso said that 'Inspiration find you but you have to be working.' I guess that is true enough but filling the artistic well is also important.

I go jogging and get my heart beating and sweat.
Also, I'll climb the mountain behind my house and meditate.
Both clear my head and get my attention centered.

It's all about the music....I'll listen to music with my headphones and just drown myself in the music. :)

In my marketing class, we had a guest speaker come in and she gave us ideas that would help our creative juices flowing.

One exercise was to take menial objects like a paper clip and aluminum foil and try to make something out of it in under a minute. I made curly fries! hahahahha.

Another exercise was to try and draw an object in the room without looking down at your paper.

Both exercises emphasized the use of the left side of your brain (the creative side). It was pretty fun.

I like to read a lot. Short fiction and poetry. I find that it sparks my imagination and I'm back to making things in no time!

I just put everything down and walk away. I go off and hoop or spin poi or dance in puddles if it's raining... anything other than think about being creative. Loud music and dancing until I'm out of breath helps too. I guess it just gets the blood pumping.

What fills me up...?

Alcohol?

I'm kidding...

Like many have said, usually the answer to this kind of thing is to walk away from it and do something else. Nothing makes me crazier than when I carve out a block of time to work, sit at my workspace, spill out a bunch of beads on the table and find that... I got nothin'... no spark, no ideas, no juice. I wind up putting something together that is usually the most UN-aesthetically-pleasing thing imaginable and then staring at it and saying, "What the hell are you thinking?" LOL...

So -- I found out that it's just like when I"m doing a jigsaw or crossword puzzle and I get stuck. I have to put it down, walk away, try to engage my brain in something else... and when I'm ready to pick it back up again, the juices are flowing... most of the time. :-)

I usually clean up my bench area and get all the half finished ideas out of my sight so i don't have it distracting me. Then I will usually get to a project I've been meaning to do in my studio; put up a new shelf, clean and oil my equipment, build a new plier rack, etc., etc. This way I'm still in my creative mode but it is focused on something that I have a clear vision on what the objective is instead of that irritating jewelry design I've been staring at for an hour trying to figure out what comes next in the process.

Then I get out of my studio and call in for a pizza while I twist the cap on my ice cold bottle of Sierra Nevada pale ale.

I'm feeling creative already!

I find that making changes in my workspace does help with creativity. Right now, my workspace is a disaster and must be cleaned, new tables built, so I expect something new will happen once I sit down to weave again.

Oh! what a cool idea! I can't remember the last time I had my last dry spell. But a few years ago I read a book. It was called 5 point something or other. It was a self help book! Gotta love those kinda books. :) Well it had a very good technique that work for me and helped me clear my head! Basically they said to go do something , clean or go for a walk or whatever and think about NOTHING and it would help you solve that problem that all the brainstorming in the world isn't helping! I'll try my best to find that book. I've tried before with no luck! Maybe I will give the library a call and see if they can track down all the books I have checked out. Well you can try it and see if it helps till I can figure out the name of that darn book. :)
