what do you sell that is "custom made"? I do cotton crochet placemats in choice of colors and i also do flowerpot pen sets. I have some I sell in my etsy shop, but will make them to order in the colors, flowers, etc that the buyer would like. So, what do you make that is custom, personalized and such?
LOL I've had this issue before too. There isn't much you can do if you want to keep her business. You can try to address it at a high level with a newsletter stating your policies to all your clients. Or, if she requests a custom piece, tell her that you have new policies and require X% down and you will do one free revision. All subsequent revisions are based on $20 an hour ($20 minimum) or $X per revision.
If she calls...can you just not answer the phone? I have only had a couple clients call and want to talk about their jewelry but it wasn't too bad and it was only once.
I don't enjoy doing custom orders so much anymore. I used to. And I can generally guess what the person wants based on their description but some people are really hard to please.
I do custom one inch buttons that can either be pins or magnets. I'm hoping to branch it out into jewelry and other accessories in the near future though.
I make custom dolls/figures...right now I'm working on an Alice (in wonderland) doll out of polymer clay. I wish I had some current pix...but alas..I don't.
Any of my bags can be made in a different fabric to suit the customer. My local fabric store has a website, so I usually refer customers there to choose their fabric. It works great for me, because when they choose, I can just go to the local shop and pick it up.
I can also add or subtract pockets, lengthen straps and that sort of thing. I don't do much custom beyond that.
Studio Ala Mode - I would definitely consider what the others are saying about offering one free adjustment, and then charging beyond that. You could easily get into a neverending situation, otherwise!
wow! theres lots of custom out there. beckykay, i remember you from the "weekend thread" on etsy. Good to see some familiar faces and learn about some new designers

That's how I got into selling my jewelry. I made everything for my wedding and gifts for all my bridesmaid and helpers. Soon people started requesting stuff and now here I am, slaving over a hot torch all day. Sigh...
