I love to create! But, sometimes I just need a break or run out of ideas and need a week or two to recharge. Do you ever go through this? How do you occupy your time when you are taking a creative break?
Personally, I still like to fill that time doing this with my hands. Most often I will turn to cross-stitch (okay not completely uncreative, but I just follow a pattern and don't need to design anything). Or I like to de-fuzz thrift store sweaters and take them apart for yarn (silly, but I enjoy it) :)
I get that way with beading and with my website. I manage it myself and at times there are things I have to do and just let them go for a time. I like to do things around my house when I take that break. Clean out closets and move furniture around. It recharges me. I think it is the Feng Shui of it :)
The coloring book idea is cool! A friend of mine introduced me to making crayon art on top of an electric warming tray--running a semi-melted crayon over paper is very relaxing. I found the tray at a thrift store for $1.50. I'm learning to knit, which is a good counterpoint to working with glass--yarn feels so good.
When I was younger, we used to make sort-of-stained-glass. You take a peice of wax paper, and put crayon shaving all over it. Then you put another peice of waxed paper on top. Iron it on a low setting to melt the crayon wax and you a lovely work of art. :)
Lately, I have been using that time for doing write-ups, blogging, photographing my work - you know, marketing and promotion. I am amazed at how time consuming all of that is. There are days when I feel like an office worker.
Regarding Linkage Designs comments ~ I really hear you on how time consuming all the "other" work is. I have a friend who is in marketing and she is trying to get me to add all that time into my pricing. Some days I wish I could only create and take classes. Other days I am glad I have learned (and continue to learn) all the skills to take care of things myself. It is a ton of work.
Today ~ even though I have several sets of beads to be photographed, priced and added to my site ~ I think I will go get cozy on the couch and watch a bit of TV before my 11 year old gets home.
I completely agree, as well. It sure does take a lot of time to do the non-creating part of running a business. I'm currently trying to update all my shop pics and it is a long process. I feel like there should be a way to streamline it more, but haven't figured out the trick. I'm hoping that once i get the hang of product photography it will be quicker.
I'm right there with you, ladies. I almost feel guilty when I'm doing the non-creating stuff that HAS to be done, like I should be sewing or drawing, then, when I go too long without doing the marketing stuff, I feel guilty about that! It's definitely a challenge to find that balance.
As for what I do to unwind or renew my creativity, it's usually going to a bookstore or library to poke through books & mags for inspiration. It's actually really relaxing, and feels indulgent, but without the guilt because it's going toward inspiring my work! :-)
I have redone my photos several times. In fact I just finished redoing most of my prayer beads recently and have done about half my jewelry. I don't have many jewelry pieces yet as I just started doing it.
I am so glad to have found all of you. We all seem to face the same challenges and it is nice to hear you share about them.
Something else I struggle with is the self doubt. When I have a sale it boosts my energy ~ but if I am slow that fear and doubt creeps in. That is a constant battle too. I have invested much time and money into what I am doing. I feel like it is purposeful so I keep moving forward. My sales to date this year are way up from last year and I hold on to that to keep me plugging forward.
