I'm always curious to see the workspaces of other artists and crafters! Colors, storage, supplies... they all speak about who we are as artists. So, what does your studio look like? Is it just a small corner in the kitchen? Or do you have an entire room? How 'bout we discuss our workspaces, what we like, and "practical" stuff like storage, organization, etc.! :)

To start off, here are some pictures of my "studio" (attached). Its divided between my sewing/crafting area on one wall and then my "home office" on another wall (where I do my networking, writing, photo editing, etc! :). I'd love to have a whole room one day because right now storage for supplies is a bit of an issue! I have some supplies (trims, embroidery supplies, small notions, etc.) in the blue drawer unit (garage sale find for $5!!!), but my fabrics and larger vintage pieces that I reconstruct are in storage in the basement right now (I have a chest and dresser for that!). One thing I really need to work on is lighting (any ideas); I just don't have enough for detail work if its dark! Basically, this is unusually clean; when I'm in the middle of a project its chaos!! :)

So, show me or tell me: what does *your* space look like?

Cheers!

Mine always looks like a bombs hit it.... but I know where everything is and have a place for everything. It's just that when you make large items like hula hoops they tend to take up a lot of space.

The space I use to make my hats in is much tidier and looks very organised.

Mine too!
I am trying to make it look less post apocalyptic and now I can't find anything.

My sweat shop has taken over the living room. My main organization technique is an elabrote system of piles that is constantly rotating. When you walk in the front door of the tiny apartment my boyfriend and dog live in you must work your way through a labyrith of fabric, dress forms, industrial sewing machines, etc. Our apartment does not have one closet and "bedroom" only fits a full mattress. It's hilarious.

My studio is a real find. I got into this building in 2000 when they were renovating it - so it was very raw when we moved in. We had to build the walls to divide up this huge 1700 sq foot space. Because I was the ring leader, I got the end space by the window. A 17x17 foot window - northern light - I know, kick me. But I really appreciate it! I swear!

Especially since returning from NYC this weekend - where spaces the size of shoeboxes go for upwards of $600 a month...I am loving my studio. Here is a pic taken last fall:

Oh my gosh can I have this room. Just to have a window. Mine is in the basement and I miss sunshine.

oh wow, haven't been here in so long to see what folks have said. I just love the light you have. My work space is in my basement with no windows. love windows. Just adding a new screened porch. Sat out there for 2 days doing nothing. I think I shall be taking projects up to the porch. I just love your windows and all the light. Joan in NC

I like your studio. The view looking out the window looks really peaceful and you can probably get some great ideas.

I have a room that I must share with my husband's computer desk, but mostly I just take over everything. Currently my fabrics are overwhelming my limited storage. However I have some small drawers for sewing accessories and what not and a big box full of non-sewing related craft supplies. I share my desk with a number of my recent monsters and have great pictures on the walls and on my bulletin board to inspire me. Plants sit near my window and when I'm working I like to open the blinds to watch the busy street below me.

I keep thinking my husband is going to object to the way that I've taken over this room, but he's made no comments yet! Maybe when there's more light tomorrow I can take a picture. Though it's nowhere as clean as casey's pictures showed. Your studio space is beautiful by the way. Makes me realize how much I need to clean my own space.

Wow!! I love reading about the diversity of spaces (and am so jealous of those that have their own room! :D)!!

Wendyhumphreys: lol! My studio used to be spread out all over the house too; but my parents put their foot down (I still live at home, and although my parents are very encouraging of my creativity, they start to object when there is no place to sit and eat dinner or fabric scraps are starting to show up all over the place...). So I cleaned my room a bit and am trying to organize!! (Trying is the key phrase here... ;)

Miss Brache: Oh my! I nearly died laughing at your characterization of your workspace being a sweatshop! lol!!

Crostini: Ooooh! I'm so very jealous of that huge window! I just love working by natural light and would just die if I had a space like that! :) (Which would totally defeat the purpose, right? ;)

KarensMonster: Thank you! :) Like I said: this is unusually clean for my room (it just happens to be my bedroom too; so craft supplies compete with clothes--of which I have *many*!)! I know what you mean about fabric taking over; I have two large dressers in the basement that Dad gave me for storage, and bags of vintage clothing I reconstruct. Its a little scary down there sometimes... ;)

Sharonfosterart: Oh wow! An entire room *with* a bookcase?! You lucky gal!! :) And books on tape are great; I need to remember to get a few at the library next time I'm there! I love listening to old time radio plays online as well; keeps me occupied during those periods where I'm just doing "mindless" work. ;)

Thank you all for your responses--keep them coming! :) I'm so inspired!!

Cheers!

Hmm.. a dresser might not be a bad idea. Lucky me I'm getting some big plastic drawers for more storage today. Hooray!
