Winter will be here before you know it, the fashion mags are already trotting out the latest fall and winter fashions. So what’s trendy in scarves for the 2008-09 season? Here are 5 scarf trends you’ll see this winter:

1. Double duty scarves – Finances are tight and people are looking for essential pieces that they can mix and match. Scarves that are appropriate with a dress coat, look great with a casual sweater coat and can even be worn alone with a turtleneck are going to be very much in fashion this winter.

2. Eco friendly scarves – The environment is on everyone’s mind these days so scarves from eco-friendly materials, recycled materials and unusual fibers are going to be very popular when the temperature drops.

3. One of a kind scarves – Unique and one of a kind items have been very popular for the last few seasons and this coming winter is no exception. Mass marketed scarves from WalMart are just not going to cut it for trendsetters and fashionistas this winter.

4. Extra long scarves – This trend started a couple of seasons ago but it’s still going to be very evident this season. Extra long scarves are chic and very practical since you can wear them a lot of different ways and stay extra warm. Plus they’re a great accent piece.

5. Scarflettes – The other length extreme, scarflettes, are also going to stay popular. Scarflettes are just big enough to go around your neck and get tucked inside your coat. You can wear the scarflette on its own or with a coat and some people find them more convenient than traditional scarves. But they’re very easy to lose to take care that you always put it in your pocket when you’re not wearing it and don’t spend a lot of money on one in case you lose it.
