People always ask me why I named my business "Christina's Magic".... Here it is... the lyrics to a song that were written in 1991 by Daniel Ruddick. Funny thing is that the song was written the morning after I had met him at the Cactus Cafe in Austin, Texas. He woke up alone, in his hotel room at 8 am with this song on his mind.

I was at the Cactus Cafe with a date. I had gone outside when the band took a break and Daniel was setting on the edge of the water fountain with "The Chronicle" in one hand and a cigarette in the other. He asked if I could tell him where some good Austin music could be heard and so I circled a few clubs in the rag only to realize later that he knew as much or more about Austin music as I did. We went back into The Cactus, I sat with my date and he at the bar. My friend Ellen came over to me and said "Did you notice the cute guy with the leather vest and hat on at the bar?" "Yeah" I said, "I just spoke to him outside." Ellen went to stand at the bar and Daniel came and sat int he chair that Ellen had just been sitting in. As if not to notice that that I was sitting with a man, he asked if he could buy me a drink. I said "Yes, I'm drinking coffee." He returned with coffee and said "This is going to make a great song." I said "What is?" He replied "How I am going to get you away from your date." I then said "It isn't going to be a very long song". We got up and left. We went to have coffee at the Kirby Lane Cafe and then I took him back to his hotel room where we talked until about 6 am. It could have ended there but I had left my earrings on his night stand. That was the beginning a very magical summer of drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, writing songs and falling in love. Not in that order. Love at first sight, maybe, star crossed lovers... yes.

When the song was written at 8 am on the morning of August 20, 1991, none of the events that Daniel wrote about had yet occurred. Yet! As each incident occurred, one by one, we never questioned each event as if our destiny was in total control. Then it was time for him to return to Canada with a promise to soon return. He would call on the anniversary of the day, hour and minute of our meeting. And as life sometimes throws us curve balls, a series of events occurred in his life that prevented his return. His brother died, his father became ill .... and here it is ... 2007 and ... he is there and I am here with a shoe box full of songs and a dear friend Billy Doss.
