I would like to hear what we can and can't do. I get emails all the time with people advertising their shops with discounts and so on. I sent an email this morning to let people know I have not a ebay shop as well as Etsy. The two are totally different. I can't a reply from someone who said it was spamming, So I'm confused. I thought that is why we have this site. HELP!

Please tell me what is the right way to get the word out.

Spam is defined as unwanted &/ unsolicited email messages. If someone sends you a message that you did not ask for, ie put your name on their mailing list or it is some pertinent info that you are expecting in your inbox, technically it is considered spam.

Being friends with someone on a ring like ning does not mean that a person wants to get emails from you. I consider it spam but for me it doesn't matter much to me because I use my secondary email for ning stuff. I guess that is why I have over 1000 unread emails in my inbox. (!!!!!)

If you want to make an announcement you should put it in the "Self Promotion" section of the forums. That way when people see your message it is because they wanted to read it. I even got a message from the new admin of this site recently stating this.

Thank you Stacey. I guess I don't know where the self promotion section is. I guess I need to pay more attention. When you say ning, I don't get it. I'm very new at this and learning everyday. Your help is most appreciated.

I consider it spam. Anything that sounds like an ad to me I don't bother reading.

I only joined the site less than a week ago, and I am already getting emails from people telling me about their sales etc etc. So I class it as spam, I didn't sign up for mailing lists from these people, if I did that's fine on getting the email.

Good I'm glad I asked - I don't want to be a pest. What's the best way to communicate with everyone. I want to do things right. I would like to hear how other people communicate their business. Again thank you

I think any mail that is unsolicitated is spamming, if the person never signed up for that e-mail, then it's spam. You can have a little blog article about joining a newsletter - and those that join, you can e-mail them all you want.

I'm not a fan of the advertisment that I get through indiepublic, but I just ignore it. It may really bother some people, so just be careful that you only send to people who have agreed to have it sent to them :)

Thank you Angie, this is very informative. Especially for people that are new and not sure about this subject. I've only sent two emails and only to friends since being on here. So the last one I sent was a couple of months ago. I will not do it again. Guess it would be beneficial to get involved in more discussions. When you say blog article. Does that mean just about anything or only on your business? I love to write so I guess that's the thing to do. I have written about my bipoler, addictions, and dreams coming true. One I first got on here I got some attention but now it has slacked off. Any more sugguestions.

Ning is the platform that hosts all kinds of special interest rings or groups. I think Indiepublic is one of the largest I've ever seen at nearly 7,000 members now. It really is a community and you get out of it what you put into it.

As for blogging, I have a Blogger blog where I post regularly (yes, I am addicted to it!) so I don't do much on my Indiepublic blog but I get lots out of the discussions going on around here.

You might benefit from the Ning site that Spincus set up; Considerations is a wealth of info on the subject of marketing and getting yourself out there.

Best,

That sounds great Stacy! Thanks. Actually, I did start a ning. I just hit on it yesterday. The sites all look alike. I have a blog on blogspot and I actually have started a blog on marketing and blogging. I thought I might research and get other people ideas and put them in the blog. I'm reading a book called "Blogging," and it is helping. It also helps with marketing and a lot of suggestions. My blog is www.jewellsdreamsbyvickie.blogspot.com
